St. John’s Lutheran Church is located in Galva. They are known for the ecumenical spirit and offer many activities and opportunities to serve the Galva community. Children are particularly welcome and have numerous opportunities to participate in various Sunday school, Bible school, and youth choir programs.

Four communities within a one hour drive or less of Galva have hospitals with Ida Grove Hospital being only 15 minutes away.

Also, Good Samaritan retirement facility is located in Holstein, 7 miles from Galva; Willow Dale Nursing Home, located at Battle Creek, and Sunset Noll Retirement Home at Aurelia are approximately 30 miles from Galva.

Within the county, patient care is provided by three family practitioners, two dentists, three DO’s; two DCs and one other physician. Emergency care is provided 24 hours a day, with ambulance service provided by local communities and air ambulance by Siouxland Paramedics. Emergency medical treatment facilities are within 7 minutes of the town.

LAW AND ORDER

The Galva Volunteer Fire Department not only covers the city proper but a number of rural townships as well. At present there are 25 members on the department.

Nearby Storm Lake and Ida Grove have trials for the fitness and/or nature enthusiast.

There is a 4 hole par 3 golf course located within the town of Galva. In addition, nine golf courses are within one-half hour drive of the town.

BASKETBALL AND TENNIS

Basketball and tennis courts are available. An additional 10 public tennis courts are available within one-half hour drive of Galva.

SOFTBALL / BASEBALL

Galva has a great many enthusiasts of these two sports. Starting in kindergarten, , any youngster who wishes to participate can play in the summer ball program. Available for the “older kids,” who never outgrow their love of the sport, is a local co-ed league which plays throughout the summer months.

SWIMMING AND BOATING

Several public swimming pools are available in the area. Two country clubs are located within one-half hour drive of Galva. In addition, local rivers and lakes offer an excellent opportunity not only for swimming but for motor boating, water skiing and fishing.

HUNTING

One of Ida County’s major attractions is hunting. Pheasant hunting begins in November as do several split seasons of deer hunting. There are bed and breakfasts in the area catering especially to hunters.

MUSEUMS

The Battle Creek Museum of Natural History, located in nearby Battle Creek, offers the visitor a realistic look at Ida County living in the early 1900’s. Moorehead Park in Ida Grove offers a country school and railroad depot that provide interesting historical excursions to all.

PARKS

Galva public park offers a fully functioning shelter house including RV hook up. A play area for children and horseshoe courts are available in the park.
